How Powerball works
A Powerball line is five white balls from 1 to 69 plus a single red Powerball from a separate pool of 1 to 26. The jackpot requires all five white balls and the Powerball; matching the Powerball alone still wins the smallest prize tier.
Because the red ball is drawn from its own pool, it is statistically independent of the white balls and is modelled separately in any serious analysis.
